The latest… 11/28/95

Hi all… hope this messages finds you well… I can’t believe how long my distribution list is getting. If any of you are sick of me, let me know and I’ll take you off… :-)
I left something big out of the last update letter that I wanted to share with you and also wanted to give a general ‘view’ on how things are going.

As for what I left out… back in June, when things seemed to be falling apart workwise, I got to thinking about where I was heading and what I wanted to be doing. I recalled back to when I was doing a lot of professional sound work and remembered someone telling me about a new department of Sound Design and Engineering at the Yale School of Drama and how they were looking for people like me to attend. At the time it was mentioned to me, I was in school at UCSD and was gung ho on the Computer Science and Engineering thing and just put it on the back burner to entertain perhaps at a later time.

That time came this past June and I poked around on the Net and made a few phone calls and made contact with the two gentlemen responsible for the department and let them know who I was, and what my background was and they both became interested in me and excited about the prospect of having me in the program. I was immediately sent paperwork to fill out as they wanted to see if I couldn’t begin this past September. As things worked out though, it was just too late in the year and too far past deadlines to get everything approved by all the necessary departments. I did make a trip up to New Haven, Connecticut when I was in New York at the end of August and met both of the gentlemen I had been corresponding with and spent part of the day with the one I would probably be working most closely with. It turned out to be a very successful interview and the door was basically left open for me for Fall of ‘96. The program is a Masters program, which after completing would earn me a certificate of completion, redeemable for a Master of Fine Arts degree if I ever get around to completing an undergraduate degree. So, I don’t know what I’m going to do with it at this point… only time will tell.

I returned Sunday from New York after having spent the past week there with my buds Travis Russell and Errolyn Yavorsky. I also got a chance to spend some time with Molly Davis, Danielle Decker and Stephanie Escajeda which made the trip even better. I managed to get to three shows this time: The Tempest with Patrick Stewart, Miss Saigon (yes, it was my first time), and A Christmas Carol with Terrence Mann and Ben Vereen. All of the shows were great, Tempest being quite outstanding. I also got to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) and the Museum of Natural History, both of which are amazing places and definitely worth the visit. The Met currently has an entire area full of Rembrandt works (and those of his pupils and immitators) which was incredible. Thanksgiving Day was spent at Molly’s… Travis was pretty sick that day so we didn’t make it to the Macy’s parade, no great loss to me. ;-) Molly made a fabulous feast… undescribable… delicious is all I can say (thanks again Molly!). I even helped peel potatoes… The trip home was interesting, to say the least. Even leaving 2 hours before my flight, Trav and I didn’t get to JFK until 5 minutes before my flight was scheduled to leave. After rushing to the gate, bypassing huge lines at the ticket counters, I was able to check my baggage and get on the plane in time, just to find that we wouldn’t push back from the gate for another 40 minutes… oh well. It then took 2.5 hours to get home from San Francisco International (there weren’t any flights open into San Jose) as I took a shuttle with 7 other people and was the last to be dropped off… no worries.

Things at work are going good as usual… I beginning to yearn for San Diego again though. There’s a possibility that the company will open an office in SD in the new year, so I’m holding out for that. The CEO and at least one board member of the company actually live in SD, so I don’t see why this shouldn’t happen.

The weekend before my trip to NYC, I was in San Diego pretty much for the sole purpose of collecting my settlement from Providence Studios. I had agreed to take a computer system from them, rather than the money I was owed as I knew they were going to do everything in their power to keep from having to pay me. Just had to cut my losses this time. I’ve learned some good lessons this year… hope I don’t have any more years like this one…. So I do have a new computer, for those who are interested it’s a Pentium 90 with 48MB of RAM, 2 512MB Hard Drives, SCSI, CD-ROM, 3Com Etherlink III, #9 GXE 64 Pro PCI video card, keyboard, mouse, and a good size monitor. I’ve installed Linux (a free version of Unix) on it and it’s humming along nicely here on the net.

To those who I haven’t heard from in awhile (a month or more), it would be nice to get a message so I know you all are still alive. :-) Thanks!

Until next time…

Notes:
- Please note my URL has changed since my last letter… it’s on my signature below (which has also changed)…
- Next definite scheduled appearance in SD will be the weekend of the 9th (this is Traditions move in isn’t it? (Someone let me know)
