The latest… 2/1/96

Greetings all from Southern California. As you may or may not have heard, I have moved back to San Diego and am currently operating out of my house in Rancho Bernardo. As you probably noticed, things were hairy for me right before leaving San Jose. Talk about Murphy’s Law rearing its ugly head.

A week and a day before I was supposed to leave SJ, Info.NET’s T1 (main connection) to the internet was effectually ‘cut’. After discovering this from home that morning, I rushed into work that morning to get on the phone and figure out what was going on and when things would be back up. I was then informed that according to MCI’s accounting department, we were not paying our bill and our line was scheduled to be cut on January 11th. I the took this up with our person who takes care of the bills and she had copies of cancelled checks to MCI in her possession. She then got on the phone with various VP’s and ‘important people’ at MCI and tried to get a handle on just what had happened. The final story from MCI was that accounting had been applying our checks to a different account, so ours did not appear as if it were being paid for, and therefore was turned off. At this point I’m just thinking, “Ok… fine. Now let’s just flip the switch and turn it back on so I can get my email.” No such luck. Turned out MCI technicians had already given our port in their equipment to a new customer. Now I’m getting perturbed. I was upset enough by then that I was definitely ready to jump ship on MCI… this isn’t the first trouble of this kind I’ve seen with them. I had recently been talking with a company called CRL Networks to get information on connecting myself down here in SD, so I called them up to get me a quote on taking over Info.NET’s connection. They were very helpful and after some delays on Pac Bell’s part, our connection was back up at about 6:30PM last Thursday. I spent that evening reconfiguring all of our machines so that I could leave the following day and finish converting everything over from down here. InterNIC has updated it’s records with the new IP addresses and mail from the outside world seems to be getting in just fine now, indicating that all is well.

I am presently working on starting a new company. This effort is the culmination of a couple years’ dreams and preparations. I’ll be starting it with a couple of the guys I’ve been working with over the past couple years, Rob Evans and Steve Gefrom. Currently I’m getting the business plan written and finalized, looking for office space and a provider for the T1 line into the internet. If any of you have any leads on who might have some office space available in the San Diego area (preferably north of highway 94 and east of or close to the I-15) please let me know. If they’d give me a break on rent in exchange for some computer services or access to the T1, that’s even better.

And while I’m on the subject, Greg, Travis and I have been talking aout getting a place and what would really be ideal for us is something in the SDSU/Claremont areas. We’d like a 4 bedroom place so if anyone knows of a suitable house for rent in these areas or anywhere really, please let me know. We plan to start the company doing Internet based services, from network design, setup and support, to Web page design and storage. After we gain some momentum in this area, we’d like to expand our offerings into areas we used to work in: 3D modeling animation, composition and special effects for file and television, Audio production and recording/editing, etc. Sounds like it’s going to be what we had dreamed CyberBridge would become… It’s great to be back home. I’m loving not spending quite so much time in front of the computer screen and am getting to like working on the ‘business’ side of things. It’s great to be able to hang out with everyone again. I don’t have a home phone at the moment as I’m not sure how long I’ll be here in the RB house. So the best way to reach me is my pager at……. Also, some of you got the message and others did not, but please use this address (jwigdahl@cts.com) as my primary email address. Look forward to hearing from all of you…
