Reflections on expectant fatherhood

Some of you may have heard, and others perhaps not, but in any case... it's true, I am now an expectant father! Jess and I are both very excited, as are our families. I realize many of you are saying to yourselves, "well it's about time!" but now is just really the perfect time. I can't wait!

Apache (httpd) 403 errors & SELinux in FC3

Quick fix:

chcon -R -t httpd_sys_content_t <path to web files>

Now for the meat:

So in Fedora Core 3 we now have SELinux enabled by default in the installation. I decided to leave it enabled because security is a "Good Thing" (right?) and I knew I was going to have to get familiar with it at some point. So this was all fine and good until I ran into the first piece of the system I wanted to work with that was affected by the default policy that's called "targeted".

Net effect on the election

Man. All the left leaning folks I talk to/read the blogs of (none of whom voted for Kerry, but rather, against Bush) have sure been belly aching since the dust settled from the election. Everyone is saying things like "are Americans really so stupid?" IMHO, it's fairly obvious we're NOT stupid enough to vote Mr. Wishy-Washy Charile Brown into the white house, which should be considered a good thing. And with the lack of a better alternative, we chose the only candidate we had left, who, in all honesty, isn't doing a bad job whether you agree with his principles and policies or not.

What has struck me as particularly funny about the aftermath is the "disbelief" expressed by the bloggers out there. This article captures it. My fave quote:

"The longer the Democrats pretend that their vacuum of righteousness is actually reaching the public at large, helped by NPR, the more trouble they will be in. Be it an internet wasteland like New Mexico or fat pipe rich Connecticut, it doesn't matter. George W. Bush kicked your blogging ass."

Update: FWIW... I never stated above that Bush has done / is doing a "good job", and never said there aren't any problems with how things are being run. The point of this post was to note the apparent disbelief of the bloggers out there who thought their endorsement of Kerry signified more than simply the notation of their own opinion.

Start-up banks on Java hardware boost

Doesn't the fact that a company exists with the sole purpose of speeding up Java, AND has been able to get 3 rounds of venture capital funding signify a deeper lying problem? Start-up banks on Java hardware boost | CNET News.com

But There’s No Software for the Mac, Right?

This is an excellent commentary addressing a lot of points that are commonly misunderstood about the Macintosh. If you're a Windows user who has become disenchanted with what you might have thought was a decent system, this is definitely worth your time to read.
